About Kovilakanda

Despite its relative proximity to Kandy, the community of Kovilakanda suffers from a lack of connectivity, due to the lack of transport links (frequent bus routes) and a deficit of infrastructure, limiting access to jobs and development.

Since 1995, Wembley Estate’s revenue has helped finance the following ventures:

  • Schools

  • Seniors

  • Livelihoods, jobs and vocational training

WEMBLEY MONTESSORI

In 2013, the government contemplated closing the Wembley Montessori, citing the costs of administering to a small group of students. Had the montesorri closed, the community’s youngest members (aged 4-6) would have had to commute for over 1.5 hours to a nearby town, adding a significant financial and time burden for their families.

Wembley Estate stepped in to refurbish the facilities, provide the school supplies, and recruit volunteer music and English teachers. Following an assessment, the government decided that the community’s investment ameliorated the financial conditions to keep the school running. 17 children are currently enrolled.
